The Fives have been eager to stay at this working farm / campground for a while now. The campground is located just minutes from the craziness of downtown Freeport yet feels worlds away. It is situated on a quiet peninsula right next to Wolfe’s Neck State Park and has three main sections: East Bay, Middle Bay, and West Bay.
While Recompense Shore Campground has many waterfront sites, we opted for more space and privacy in the East Bay. A short walk past fields and pasture brought us to a staircase leading to the water. The large rocks were a hit with Five of Hearts and Five Ball, while High Five enjoyed the pebbly beach and the salty taste of Casco Bay on his fingers. The water was surprisingly warm, or perhaps our tolerance for cold water got a boost swimming in the brooks of Baxter State Park and bays of Down East Maine.
On our way out the next day we drove over to the West Bay to check out the cows, sheep, gardens, and of course the playground. We drove past small groups of campers and counselors participating in the weekly day camps organized by Wolfe Neck Farm. A family we spoke to on the campground was camping at Recompense for the week while their four-year-old was in camp. They were on the playground with their youngest while their little camper was exploring nearby fields for bugs, feeding sheep, and picking fresh veggies in the garden. The sealed it for us; we will have to return next year so Five of Hearts and Five Ball can live it up at camp while High Five gets some rare one-on-two time with Mom and Dad.
The Fives’ Rating: 4 out of 5
Note and Picture from Five of Hearts:
The campground had a great place to swim with lots of rocks to climb on. They also have a fun day camp which we’re going to go to next year.
