We have done some form of homeschooling with Five of Hearts since she was two. As each of her brothers came along they joined in our school routine. Due to moving into our new rental house we planned to start school today, a week later than usual. The kids were super excited to get back into the routine with their teachers Mr. & Mrs. T (AKA mom and dad). Last night we got everyone into bed early and had everything laid out for our first day.
Then around 8pm the fireworks started. There was a huge party just two houses up from us and they let off a fireworks display that no one could sleep through. Although watching the fireworks explode through our huge picture window was an awesome experience it didn’t help anyone sleep. As we settled the kids back to bed we couldn’t help notice that the cold symptoms that the kids were fighting throughout the day started coming on strong. As the night wore on we fetched glasses of water, blew noses, and tried to comfort our sick kids to sleep.
As the sun came up this morning Five of Hearts croacked through tears and a sore throat how she was too sick to get out of bed and her first day of school was ruined. Although we felt really bad for the kids we felt so happy that homeschool offers the flexibility to deal with such a crisis. No teachers to call or missed classes to make up. Instead we let the kids rest and recuperate while reading books on the couch. So, while our school year didn’t start with the same explosive power as last night’s fireworks we will make the best of it.
