For the past few years now, we have been a bit greedy when it comes to New Year’s Eve. Not content to welcome the New Year just once, we have sought out international radio stations that would let us stretch that magical moment of midnight into an entire day of dancing and festivities. We think we’ve refined our tradition fairly well, and now we begin our New Year’s Eve party at 8:00 A.M. to welcome the New Year in Australia and continue all the way through midnight our time (assuming the elder Fives can make it that long). It can be a bit of a grueling day, but it’s a great excuse to dabble in the cultures and traditions across six different continents.

This year also brought an extra cause for celebration. We’ve always dreamed of some way to add party lights to our dance celebrations, but nothing quite fit our needs. Disco balls require mounting and are not portable, and all the light machines we’ve come across get lukewarm reviews at best. Five Spice, never one to back away from a challenge, finally found the perfect solution for us. The LED finger lights she tracked down fit well on even the youngest Five, made a dazzling makeshift disco ball as we tied them to a ceiling fan, and even spruced up our Cardboard Christmas Tree.
Aside from the LED lights, the other big hit this year was the Caipirinha drinks we adapted from the International Vegetarian Union recipe (think Rio pineapple ice cream float). Whenever winter has you down (as sometimes happens to us here in Maine), this pineapple treat is sure to transport you to a warmer place.
5 minute prep time (longer if you make the pineapple sherbet yourself)
1 pint pineapple sherbet (we used the fabulous recipe from Lick It! Creamy Dreamy Vegan Ice Creams Your Mouth Will Love)
2 cups pineapple juice
1 liter lime seltzer
Scoop 1/2 cup sherbet into a tall glass.
Add 1/2 cup pineapple juice
Add 1/2 cup lime seltzer
