Shut Down

Things were going pretty well. We had seen bears, moose, mountain goats and completed some pretty amazing hikes. Granted the weather was on the chilly side, but we had mentally prepared ourselves for a colder Montana climate.

After a lay-over day in East Glacier Park to wait out the sleet and snow we were ready to explore the trails at Two Medicine. We were out bright and early and ready to hike until we were met by a ranger telling us that the road to Two Medicine was closed. We figured it was because of the snow and although we were disappointed we figured we would just head to West Glacier earlier than expected, check into our monthly rental, and head up the Going to the Sun Road.

picsay-1380767788008It turns out that while we were holed up in East Glacier Park enjoying the fine vegan fare at Serrano’s, the United States Government shut down. So, when we reached the gates at West Glacier we were met by barricades and a lot of other disappointed folks. Of course we can roll with the punches and hopefully the park will re-open before our month here is over, but trying to explain what is going on in Washington D.C. to three kids who just want to get out and explore the park is difficult.

In our family quitting the game because you don’t like your opponents move is not an option. For better or worse we stick it out and continue to do our best each and everyday. So, for now we will do just that and find other ways to enjoy the area around Glacier National Park and hopefully very soon this whole crazy mess will be over.

Not quite the same thing as seeing wildlife in the park but hanging out with the local llama is still an enjoyable pastime.
